What is the number of cuts or crimps I can get from a fully charged battery? It depends on the size and type of cable being compressed or cut. We have noted there are many variables that determine the number of cycles. Our product catalog has crimping or cutting estimates listed to use as a guideline. Some variables include: Ram travel-stroke; type of material being cut or compressed - Cu, Al, Steel, rebar, etc.; Size of material being cut or compressed; Outside temperature; Weather conditions; Battery condition. Users can increase battery life cycle by allowing the tool to rest in between a series of cuts or crimps.
What is the overall life of a battery? Both CRCTBPEI and CRCTBP can be recharged approximately 800-1000 times, which may vary depending on recharging frequency. Proper maintenance will give you the maximum number of recharge cycles. The CRCTBPI has an indicator on its side that will give you a reading on the number of recharge cycles. The CRCTBPI indicator circuit has a 1 year guarantee and all batteries have a 5 year guarantee. T&B can analyze and condition any battery suspected to be losing capacity, simply return it to us for a FREE evaluation.
How can I tell when a compression is complete? All T&B Battery powered tools have a by-pass cartridge that relieves pressure when maximum output is reached. This is noted by a series of audible "clicks" followed by the tool running in "neutral" mode. The tool cannot be cycled again until the ram is released. It is not necessary to fully retract the ram. This will save on battery cycle life when crimping smaller wire.
Can a T&B cutter be overloaded when cutting? Yes! Although the cutters are equipped with a by-pass cartridge, the blades are susceptible to damage when cutting materials other than those specified. However, the tools' hydraulic circuit will be protected from overload by a pop-out overload button. Wait 15 seconds and reset by pushing it in.
How can I release the jaw if it hangs up after a connection or cut is made? In both cases, the release mechanism must be activated. Once it's activated, continue to hold this position to assure the return oil port is open and at the same time carefully pry the jaws apart.
If the tool jaws are fully advanced and will not retract, how can I tell if the release mechanism is working? The pistol style, or double trigger tools, (TBM6BSCR/TBM58BSCT) have a mechanical release trigger which can be activated at any time during the cycle. It may be hard to depress if fluid pressure has built up and has not yet bypassed. In this case, pull trigger with both hands or reactivate the tool until the by-pass is achieved. Recheck trigger release and it should easily be depressed. If jaws will still not retract, refer to the previous question. The push button tool, TBM14BSCR, utilizes an electrical retract mechanism which can be activated anytime during cycling. If you can hear it function, then the return port is open and there should be no pressure at the tool jaw. Remember to hold this button while freeing the jaw as described above.
Can I release the tool if the battery fails and I don't have a spare battery available? Yes! (Remember that this only applies to the electrically released tools). The tool pressure can be released by unscrewing the center 4 mm hex screw located on the bypass cartridge at the top of the TBM14BSCR. Remove the rubber plug, insert a 4 mm hex wrench and unscrew until the ram retracts. Once released, you must contact our service department to reset the pressure using a pressure gauge. The pistol style tools do not need a battery to release since they utilize a mechanical lever and can be released at any time.
What will happen if I drop the tool? The tool housings are made of high impact plastic and have been designed to handle waist high drops. Case damage may still occur depending on the impact angle. At this height the internal components should not be affected. A new housing and labels are available at a minimal cost. All BATTPACs come with a shoulder harness or carrying strap and should be used while lifting the tool to help avoid drops that may damage the unit.
How difficult are the battery power tools to repair? We do not recommend that you attempt to repair the tools unless you have T&B factory training. Putting the internal components into the housing is difficult because you must route wire, fit small springs and trigger components, and properly align all pieces for an exact fit. Components may be damage if they are installed incorrectly and the tool will not function properly. Servicing these tools by anyone other than authorized repair centers may void manufacturers warranty. We recommend factory service until proper repair training is obtained.
What does the red LED indication on the side mean while activating the tool? The display lights when the battery has passed the 75% depletion level. The LED display will light when the trigger is depressed to indicate the battery is almost spent. It may also light when the cut or compression reaches the top cycle. The flashing display serves as a reminder to have a spare battery on hand. Continue to operate the tool until it does not respond to the pull of the trigger. Remember to let the battery cool before charging.
How can I tell if the batteries are charged? The chargers LED display will go out indicating a full charge on the CRCTDC 12V DC charger. The CRCTQC 15 minute quick charger will show an orange LED display indicating a full charge. The new CRCTBPI "SMART" battery is now available and has an LED circuit that will readily indicate the percentage of charge while in use or by depressing the "check" button.
Can the BATTPAC be used on energized cables? All tools can be used on energized cables without harming the internal circuitry. They have been tested up to 50 KV, however, if the tools are grounded or touch other electrical phases on high voltage lines, they would be destroyed. Caution must be paramount when using any product around energized cable. Always adhere to your company's procedure.
Can battery powered tools be insulated? Yes! T&B can supply these tools with a dipped head to protect from "brush" contact while in use. We use a double stage process that is rated at 1000V, and can be installed on all compression heads. Precautions should be taken to avoid grounding conditions.
Do extreme hot or cold temperatures have any effects on the battery powered tools? Yes! Although these tools are designed to be used in all types of weather conditions, extreme hot or cold temperatures will effect tool performance. Extremely hot temperatures, above 110 degrees F will cause the battery to heat up rapidly and may reduce crimping cycles. It may also increase cycle times caused by thinning hydraulic fluid at these temperatures. Extremely cold temperatures, below -10 degrees F will cause the hydraulic fluid to be thicker, and related components to slow causing reduced cycles. Prior to using the tools in these cold temperatures, it is recommended to allow the tool to warm to room temperature for optimal performance.
